Plans, Documents and Tools

A typical set of risk management plans, documents and tools would include, but not be limited to:

• Risk management strategy/policy – an approach set out by executive management within the company taking into account risks associated with the business and inclusive of risk objectives, targets and KPI’s to measure achievement
• A general risk management procedure or guide 
• A safety specific hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control procedure
• Checklists to support the hazard identification process
• Forms for the recording of the hazard identification, risk assessment and control process
• Risk calculation factor/tool to assist in the assessment process
• Risk control plan – a document that registers all risks and puts in place responsibilities, timelines and control mechanisms in a priority order to support overall site risk control in a summary document. This document would require monitoring, periodic review and update.

Plans and Guides

Plans are useful documents when implementing or managing systems, for activities such as scheduled maintenance, managing change or monitoring performance.

Plans that affect OH&S may take the form of:

• Risk Control Plans
• Implementation Plans/Strategies
• Training Plans
• Emergency Plans
• Maintenance Plans
• Traffic Management Plans

A typical plan shall include strategies, actions required, KPI’s, accountabilities and responsibilities and timelines. Plans should be monitored and periodically reviewed against KPI’s for effectiveness in implementation.

Guides are documents that provide additional and supporting information to existing policies, procedures and operational manuals such as provided by plant and equipment manufacturers.

Typically they are used for induction and training purposes and also as supporting documents to procedures and policies.
