OH&S – Resources to maintain safety

OH&S resource provision and its effectiveness is the responsibility of executive management i.e. Company Directors, Boards of management and senior management teams.

An Occupational Health and Safety system needs to be appropriately resourced to meet the following needs:

  • Planning and development of the Occupational Health & Safety system;
  • Development, implementation and review of OH&S policies, plans, strategies, processes and guidelines ensuring continuous improvement of the system;
  • Communication and consultative processes in place appropriate to the need of the business and as agreed by employees;
  • Provision of appropriate OH&S training and competency needs analysis and training plan/program;
  • Hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control program and management processes;
  • Investigation of major incidents and implementation of improved hazard control measures;
  • Rehabilitation and Workers Compensation management;
  • Management programs for major hazards (radiation, hazardous chemicals etc);
  • Measurement and monitoring of performance through objectives, targets, and KPI’s; and
  • Management of an OH&S audit and inspection program.

Resources need to be periodically reviewed for their appropriateness in terms of resource need, competency and capability of the allocated resources, practicality of resources management and maintenance.
