Compressed Air
Compressed air is an essential aspect of many workshops and worksites, and although it may seem relatively harmless, misuse can lead to serious injuries.
The following are typical safety considerations that should be observed:
- Do not use compressed air to clean off clothes, workbenches, cabs of work vehicles, air filters or workshop floors.
- Horseplay with compressed air has caused serious injuries - horseplay should not be tolerated on any worksite
- Never direct compressed air at your body or another person.
- When disconnecting airlines, turn off the air (never kink the hose) and bleed off the air gradually. Aim the stream away from people.
Where possible it is recommended that permanent workshop facilities are fitted with externally mounted air compressors and reticulated air lines. There are a number considerations relating to permanent installations, selection and maintenance of hoses and tools and other aspects of ccompressed air systems contained in the Safety@Work Compressed Air guidance notes.
Compressors and air powered tools require regular inspection and maintenance, including:
- Daily checks for oil leaks and correct fitting of guards
- Daily checks of tools for damage to hoses and dirty, inoperable or damaged fittings and connections
- Verification of correct operation of pressure relief valves
- Periodic inspection of the pressure vessels (as prescribed in state legislation)
