Violence and Harassment

Current research indicates a trend toward increasing numbers of reported bullying, harassment and workplace violence incidents.

Reasons appear variable according the work environment, but may include:

  • Stress
  • Anger
  • Behavioral problems
  • Drug and alcohol influences
  • Psychiatric illnesses
  • Racism
  • Sexism

Employer responsibilities:

Employers have a responsibility to ensure an environment free from bullying, harassment and workplace violence of:

  • Workers/employees
  • Contractors/subcontractors
  • Volunteers
  • Work experience students
  • Visitors to the workplace

What needs to happen?

In managing bullying and violence, the employer needs to ensure the following is undertaken:

  • Identify the likely bullying, harassment and violence trigger factors
  • Assess the potential for bullying, harassment and violence of each of the trigger factors
  • Determine appropriate and effective control measures
  • Develop policies and procedures taking into account the above and including reporting lines of communication and consultation and associated penalties for noncompliance
  • Monitor and evaluate preventive measures and ongoing performance including setting and measuring targets
  • Include bullying, harassment and violence policies in the company induction and re- induction [refresher training]
  • Investigate reported instances and provide post – incident counseling and support as required
  • Report and record instances to the Workcover Authority as prescribed by state legislation
